Shipping from Japan to Philippines

By the HBK Customs Compliance Team | Updated July 2026

A crated lathe in Osaka. Cartons of parts at a supplier's dock in Nagoya. A pallet of electronics that must reach Manila before a launch. Shipping from Japan to Philippines starts with something specific.

HBK Global Trading has imported into the Philippines since 2011, buying in nine Asian countries with Japan among them. Our customers send the cargo details; our staff advise on air or sea, file the customs entry, and follow the shipment to the door.

Japan to Philippines Shipping for Importers

What Philippine businesses buy from Japan

Machine tools, packaging equipment, motorcycle parts, electronics, hand tools, used machinery from dealer websites and auction houses. Japan is one of the nine origin countries we buy from, and the pattern here differs from the others. Our customers are trading firms, contractors, online sellers, and provincial retailers buying from Japanese suppliers and exporters.

Check the Incoterm before you compare rates

Many Japanese quotes are EXW: the price covers goods at the factory gate, nothing else. Trucking, the export declaration, and terminal handling still get paid for. FOB Yokohama means that work is theirs; EXW Hamamatsu means it is yours, and a cheap rate can finish hundreds short. Ask before you buy; if a language gap slows it, we put it in writing.

Shipping from Japan to Philippines: Cost, Time and Method

Your shipping cost depends on the method, the kind of goods, their weight, dimensions, and declared value, the pickup point in Japan, the distance to your address, and the customs treatment. Duty rates, 12% VAT, permits, insurance, storage, and demurrage land on the same invoice, so check what a quote leaves out: a cheap rate that omits origin handling or upcountry delivery can finish above a dearer one with both included.

Method Best for Notes
Air Urgent, high-value, compact items Fastest; priced on chargeable weight
Sea Larger or less urgent orders Cheaper per unit as volume rises
LCL Cargo under a full container Shares space; extra handling
Full container load Larger supplier orders Fewer touch points, less risk
Door-to-door service Customs and delivery included One price; timing follows the lane

How long does shipping from Japan to PH take?

A container ship typically reaches Manila about six days thirteen hours after sailing, with vessels leaving two to four times a week, so a missed week's cut-off means the next week. Air cargo usually takes about six days door to door. LCL awaiting consolidation runs two to three weeks. A green lane often clears inside a week; an examination adds a week. These are estimates, not a guaranteed arrival week, and in most cases the customs lane decides it.

Send your cargo details and we come back with what fits.

Air Freight from Japan to Philippines

Flying makes sense when waiting costs more money than the premium: a production line down for want of a part, samples for a client meeting, high-value electronics. Rates run higher per kilo, so the case rests on what a delay costs.

How chargeable weight affects the price

Carriers charge the greater of actual and volumetric weight — length × width × height in centimeter divided by 6,000 — so a light but bulky box bills as heavier than the scale suggests. Repacking a light, bulky consignment can save more than switching carriers.

Sea Freight, LCL and Full Container Load

Ocean carries the heavy end: machinery, equipment, tools, furniture, construction materials, and retail stock.

LCL shipping

Your goods share a container with other importers, which suits a first order or a few pallets. Billing is by revenue ton — a cubic meter or 1,000 kilograms, whichever is greater.

Full container load

A 20-foot holds roughly 33 cubic meters, a 40-foot around 67, so price both ways past 15. Fewer touch points means less risk for fragile items.

Japan Customs and Philippine Clearance

The Japan customs export declaration

Japan customs requires an export declaration before goods leave, and it must match what is in the box. Incomplete paperwork is the most common cause of delay we see, so we ensure both agree first.

Duties, taxes and de minimis in the Philippines

Duty rates follow tariff classification, and 12% VAT under the National Internal Revenue Code is computed on the dutiable value plus duty, not the invoice alone. Payment is due before release, for instance on the day the entry is assessed. Two sections of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (RA 10863) decide the rest.

Section 423 exempts goods with an FOB or FCA value of ₱10,000 or below from duties and taxes. Section 420 sets the conditions for examination: the Bureau may use non-intrusive methods such as x-ray, and physical examination follows when cargo is electronically selected, when an alert order is issued, or when the declaration raises questions. That electronic selection is what the trade calls the green, yellow, and red lanes: green passes, yellow triggers a document check, red raises the possibility of physical inspection. You pay duties before delivery, and our customs fees page sets out the workings.

The Japanese figures you will see online

This route turns up Japanese figures that do not govern your import: a JP¥10,000 threshold below which no duties apply, a simplified rate for personal effects and packages under JP¥200,000, an average duty rate of 1.8%, the same on alcohol, 10.1% on agricultural products. Those cover goods arriving in Japan, not items exported from it. Here the Philippine tariff, 12% VAT, and the ₱10,000 de minimis decide.

Certificate of origin under JPEPA, AJCEP and RCEP

The Philippines and Japan trade under JPEPA, and both are party to AJCEP and RCEP, so a certificate of origin can cut the duty rate on qualifying goods. Ask your supplier to sign and send it before the cargo ships; getting one later is difficult.

Prohibited items and restricted items

Some items are controlled whatever their price, so check what is allowed before you buy. Used motor vehicles fall under Executive Order 156. Food, cosmetics, and medical devices need FDA clearance. Rice needs quarantine, and box services cannot send it. In addition, many products carry mandatory BPS certification. You can visit the Bureau of Customs website for the current list of restricted and prohibited items.

Documents and the packing list

Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, product description, quantity, weight, country of origin, permits, consignee details. Our customs clearing page covers the entry. Complete the packing list and get every box or crate labeled to match it, which is the simplest way to avoid a hold at the port.

Our Japan Warehouse and Philippine Delivery

Receiving warehouse in Japan

Cargo comes to us two ways. Your supplier delivers to our receiving warehouse, which is simpler when you are combining an order from several sellers, or we collect it, depending on the location and size of the shipment. From there goods are exported through the ports of Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka, and Kobe, or the air terminals at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai.

Where your cargo arrives

Sea freight from Japan always arrives at the Port of Manila, and air cargo through NAIA. From there we deliver across Metro Manila and onward to Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, and Zamboanga, most of it inside a week of release. The quote says which areas are covered.

How the Shipping Process Works

1.    Send the details. Supplier, product, invoice, packing list, weight, dimensions, origin, destination.

2.   We review it. Classification, document gaps, permits, and the delivery leg.

3.   Choose a method. Air, sea, LCL, or full container, with the reasoning laid out.

4.   Cargo reaches our Japan warehouse, or we collect it where distance and size allow.

5.    Goods are exported, with the Japan customs declaration filed at origin.

6.   Entry and release. Duties paid, examination attended if the lane calls for it.

7.    Delivered to your warehouse, site, or store, typically inside the week of release.

What This Service Covers

We are a forwarder, so this route is built for commercial cargo: supplier orders, machinery, equipment, retail stock, and parts. Volume runs from a single pallet to full container loads, and a first trial order is as welcome as a regular consignment. Everything is delivered to your address.

Personal effects are a different trade, and in that case a balikbayan box service is the better route. A balikbayan box goes by sea through a consolidator and arrives roughly two weeks after the export declaration. A balikbayan box operator will do it far cheaper than we can, and the per-box rate is not something a forwarder can match. For one carton of belongings or an urgent document, a box service or an express courier is the right call. Ask us and we will give you that advice plainly, even though it is not our work.

Why Philippine Importers Choose HBK

•       Both modes, honestly compared. We say when ocean is the better call even though air books faster.

•       A reliable service. Twenty-plus years on Asian shipping lanes, with customs kept in-house rather than subcontracted.

•       One point of contact. The same staff handle your order until the goods reach you.

One carton or a full container, the work is the same: we check the paperwork to ensure it matches the cargo, confirm who pays each charge, and tell you which week to expect delivery.

What to Send for a Japan Shipping Quote

Tell us what you buy and where it needs to go, and the first figure will be close to the final one.

•       Supplier link or website, and whether they deliver to our Japan warehouse

•       Product name, description, photos if available

•       Commercial invoice and packing list, if issued

•       Quantity, weight, and dimensions per carton, crate, or pallet

•       Declared value and delivery address

•       The week you need the goods delivered

•       Permits, special handling, or insurance

•       Whether it is a single pallet, a part load, or a full container

Request a shipping quote or contact our team about the service you need. Quotes state the payment terms and what is included, and in most cases we reply the same day. You pay duties and carrier charges before release.
